Some Of The Basics

Prepare a comprehensive kit for each person that is easily accessible, and has any special needs for that persons Safety and well being. This should be the first emergency Preparedness kits, after home, that you focus on. Since you already have most of a "Prepared kit" for home, you just need to set it up in a logical way for you. You should never stop Preparing for your home supplies, just keep rotating them so they are as fresh as possible, and use freeze dried, dehydrated, and seed as much as you're comfortable with.
We keep our home emergency Preparedness kit in the basement, because that is our Safe area for earthquakes, tornadoes, lightning storms, blizzards, and high winds. The basement, or the lowest point you can Safely be is also good for the shock wave of bombs, meteor, volcano, and possibly even sun flares, EMP kinds of things. Be sure to think about shutting off your natural gas, water, and electricity as needed down there.
Our Safe area Prepare kit contains tools we may need to dig ourselves out of a house collapse. Don't just run to a Safe space, have that space Prepared for the worst. Our Safe area Prepare bag has an ax, a shovel, a small saw, and a small hand pick just in case. First aid supplies, a bit of food and water (along with our main home food storage supplies nearby), and some basic communications. We keep FRS (Family Radio Service) radios for that. Be sure to scan for others that may need help if you are able. We have a couple of neighbors that are Preparing, and we have a channel prearranged to check on each other in an emergency. We'll talk more about being prepared @home later.
